Onam is a Malayali harvest festival celebrated each year in the southern Indian state of Kerala with great zeal and fervour. The festival, which is attended by Malayalis from all over the world, lasts ten days.
According to the Malayalam calendar, it falls in the month of Chingam (which is usually between August and September). Onam celebrations will begin on August 30 (Tuesday) and will last until September 8. (Thursday).
Every year, Onam is celebrated to commemorate the demon king Mahabali's return to earth. According to legend, King Mahabali was well-known for his power and reign. The devas, who were envious of him, plotted against him to end King Mahabali's reign.
According to Wikipedia, the devas'sent Lord Vishnu to earth in the form of a dwarf Brahmin who trampled Mahabali into the netherworld.' Vamanan requested three feet of land from the generous Mahabali as his wish. Vamana measured the entire universe with his first two feet, leaving no room for his third foot.
Mahabali offered his own head to place his third foot, completing the wish. Finally, Lord Vishnu granted the king's sole wish, which is to visit his land and people once a year, which is celebrated as Onam in Kerala every year.
